Saint-Georges de Boscherville church

This church of romanesque style was thence erected between 1113 and 1140. the local chalky limestone used is said to be "de Caumont". The conception adopted by the Normans to have widely lit naves was obtained by high large windows

The church follows the Benedictine cruciform design and faces east, with bold transept both containing a tribune, which is classical in Normandy, as is frequent the lantern-tower erected above the transept crossing (ogival arches resting on abbots heads).

The choir is rather small, sufficient to shelter thirty monks or so which ranked the Abbey. The semi-circular apse is covered by a quarter of sphere supported by early 12th century archaic arches. Technical progress to be noted on the vertical elevation where the charges of the construction rest on pillars detached from the wall and thus hollowing out, in the thickness of the wall, a false alley-way (Triforium) on the second level and on the third level a real gallery of circulation for the monks, resulting in a great elegance and an economy of stone.
Outside, on the northern limit of the site, remain the vestiges of the Tancarville residence which consisted in a large reception room on the ground floor and above a private appartment communicating with the Chamberlain's chapel of the 13th : a private chapel, served by a chaplain independant from the Abbey.

Scorpions -

In the dry zone between North Africa and South Asia scorpions have caught the imagi-
nation of nomads and sedentary people in various ways. First of all, venomous scorpions
have long been considered as embodiments of evil, but also as protectors to counter the
powers of other evil forces. This is reμected in beliefs, in pictorial representations of orien-
tal art from early historic periods, and in contemporary Muslim folklore. In the mystical
imagery of Islam the scorpion appears as a symbol for the dervish’s power of mastering
evil. On another level of meaning, the scorpion is also a metaphor for sexuality. The ³nal
part of the paper deals with the meanings and uses of scorpions in local folk medicine and
magic.

Kyrie - The song sang by Erik in Boscherville as a very young boy.
(The first time his mother heard him sing in that supernaturally beautiful voice)

Kyrie Eleison: "Lord, have mercy." The first movement of the Catholic mass. Both the music and the words are so called. In the Anglican Church, after each commandment, the response is, "Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law." This is a traditional devotional song  in honor of St. Joseph, the foster-father of Jesus. He was entrusted by God with the care of Jesus and the Blessed Virgin Mary. God wanted the Holy Family to be an example to us all, so it would need a man to be its head, and to be a father figure to Jesus. Jesus wished to practice obedience to a mere man, even though He was God, to show us what we must do. Even though a father was not biologically needed in the case of Jesus (who was conceived in a miraculous way), a father WAS needed because Jesus was to live a hidden, normal human life until age 30. God wanted Jesus to be part of a proper human family in the eyes of His fellow Jews. Indeed, they could never say that He was illegitimate. They believed Him to be the son of Joseph.

Lyrics:
Kyrie Eleison (repeat)
Christe eleison (repeat)
Kyrie Eleison (repeat)

In English:
Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

Arrack

The alchoholic beverage that Erik drank while in Persia.
The milky coconut sap is taken from the flowers of palm trees before they bloom. The sap ferments quickly to become a mildly alcoholic drink called “toddy” or "palm wine,” which is then distilled in vats made of wood (usually teak). The end product is a spirit whose taste is usually described as “somewhere between whiskey and rum.” It is generally distilled to between 33% and 50% alcohol by volume (66 to 100 proof).
The word itself is derived from the Arabic word Arak (عرق, ‛araq), which means "sweat" or "strong liquor"
